We're the big little company
Coolsense NZ Ltd is a Hamilton based Refrigeration and Thermal Energy Storage Systems (TESS) manufacturing company. Formed in February 2013, Coolsense specialises in the on-farm and agri-tech markets, primarily supplying chilling equipment to the dairy farm market. It is a dedicated lean manufacturing company and has been built from the ground up using systems that fully support an Original Equipment Manufacturing operation. Its initial development of a variable capacity packaged chilled water system has built Coolsense a reputation as a manufacturer of high quality, highly efficient R410a refrigerant driven gaseous refrigeration systems, closely focusing on water and glycol as its heat transfer method.
Meet the Team
A true blue Scottish born and bred fella is the Technical Director and developer of the Varicool technology. Allan immigrated to New Zealand in 2001 as a Biopharmaceutical Process Engineer working for PPL Therapeutics (a subsidiary of the Roslin Institute) and headed up technical services department engineering the equipment to extract the protein from transgenic ewes.
In 2004 Allan was third party contracted to Fonterra to collate data on snap chilling milk. This research led to his development in 2005 of his first Thermal Storage system which through his company New Zealand Cold Ltd he went on to gain a Technical Appraisal Project grant from Technology New Zealand.
In 2006, the final concept resulted in a chilling system named the Aqua-TESS and was launched onto the market in 2007 with 30 reference sites established. In 2009 Milfos purchased the technology and this unit is now known as the i-Converter. Allan’s technology was launched into the Australian, Britain and the Fonterra China mega-farm markets and he was responsible for many of those installations.
In 2013 the opportunity existed to redevelop a new chiller system using new technology advancements in the refrigeration industry and this formed the basis of incorporating Coolsense NZ Ltd and the establishment of the Vari-Cool system. Allan says “I’ve been working with chilling systems and compromising on getting the exact product I wanted since I started in the industry in 2005. This time we have really been allowed to concentrate on building something that the Coolsense team and I could really be proud of”.
Allan is married with four daughters and when he’s not developing state of the art refrigeration systems he rides very fast motorbikes.
Simon heads up the production management position. His expertise has been built over years having worked with Allan previously and now within Coolsense on the Vari-cool project. Simon joined the company in its early developmental stages and has been responsible for a ground up build of both systems and processes of a manufacturing facility that follows lean practices. Simon is married with a recent addition of a second young daughter to the family.
Carl, is a qualified Electrical Engineer and his role overseas all machine builds, with his electrical expertise applied to the internal electrical needs of each machine. Carl is British born and emigrated to New Zealand in 2006. Carl is married with twin daughters and an avid follower of the Leicester City football team.
Richard is our contracted programmer and is responsible for all the “smarts” behind the Vari-cool PLC drives. A qualified Electrician and Automation Engineer Richard has a key role in the developmental stages of each project. He resides in Tauranga and a keen mountain biker in his spare time.
Gavin is an independent contractor in charge of business development in the South Island of New Zealand. The South Island is a primarily large target market for the Vari‐Cool product due to larger platform dairy farms. Gavin as a former employee of LIC, one of New Zealand’s oldest farming co‐ operatives and before that a dairy farmer himself, has over 23 years in the dairy industry and is at his happiest driving up farmers driveways rather than in an office. In fact his office is his four wheel drive truck. Gavin enjoys trap shooting, has competed in drag racing cars over the years and more recently might be seen fishing off the coast of Oamaru or developing his passion for photography, often from a remote controlled Drone.
Richard, is our Junior Engineer responsible for the development and maintenance of the model audit and Meta data storage vault, generation of all systems, operational, electrical, installation, maintenance manuals and 3D modelling. Richard is the youngest of the team and been with the Coolsense team for two years. He is newly married.
Tim oversees the Operational Directorship of the company. Having invested into state of the art technology, a company that has been focussed to date on the intricate detail of building top of the line chillers with modern manufacturing facilities and processes, Tim brings financial, supply chain and marketing experience to the table of Coolsense. A business owner of a former company that had manufacturing capabilities, exported, imported and wholesaled nationwide Tim has returned to his agricultural heritage and is looking forward to the challenges of the business’s next growth stages. He is married to Kate with three teenage children and enjoys a wide variety of outdoor and sporting activities in any spare time he can find.
Kate is a Director and shareholder of Coolsense taking on specific project work. She has extensive business interests in dairy, horticulture, viticulture, engineering firms, commercial property and property development. Kate is involved in charity work, loves her exercise, aggressive dog walking and being a good mum.
